Continental

Mumbai Times Cafe'

| | |
Summary: Outrageous
Description:

Horrible is one of the adjectives you can think of.

They let you in against a cover charge of Rs300 which is adjusted against F&B.

The waiters don't know anything about the menu. The pizza served is a 6"X 4" (Have you heard of a shape like that for a pizza?)

The fried rice was the worst I have ever eaten.. made with God knows shat oil / lard..

The adjoining discotheque does not have sound-proof walls. So the jarring and pounding does bother you immensely.

Just avoid their loos if you are not the kind who can handle throwing-ups.

They have a pint sized menu and half of the items in it are "Not available" !!!

It is just a seedy joint where you see lots of young boys and girls boozing/puffing away to glory.

F&B : 1/10
Ambience : 5/10
Service: 3/10
Facilities : 2/10

Overall rating : 2.5/10

NEVER EVER GO TO THIS ONE. WASTE of TIME & MONEY.

GRASS Ranade Rd. Dadar W

| | | | | | | | |
Summary: BIG DISAPPOINTMENT - CRASS !!
Description:

The hoardings tempt you. "GRASS"... the name sounds like a vegetarian paradise.. it was a flop show.

Dare not use their washroom/loo-s, especially after eating. The horror of the place might make you lose your lunch/supper.

Nice place, interiors.. Grrreat potential.. these guys (who are running it) are just RUINING it.. :-(

We (spouse & self) were the only 2 people eating there at 10 pm on a Thursday nite.. That pretty much sums up things.

Some lousy movie was on the wall projection cable TV. We requested the waiter to change it to any Eng News channel, the reply came back, All Eng News channel are paid channels and we have not renewed our payments !!

They have pizza in their menu. When we enquired the waiter about it, he said it was a nine inch 'pijja'. Thank you very much !

The prices are very expensive for what they serve. They slap a VAT of 12.5% but it is not mentioned anywhere on the menu. Further there is no Mah. ST/ CST Regn. no. on the bill. God knows where the VAT goes.. (to fund their VAT-69s.. I guess)

Six tiny pieces of mushrooms with two tb-spoonfuls of a gaudy red sauce - The starter - was INR130.. a big flop

I suspect they dump the sauces/ketchups used by the road-side sandwich-wallas inti their gravies.. you get tha unmistakeable (dis)taste in your mouth.

That sums up the experience of "Eggplant-in-Hot-Garlic-Sauce" (INR115). It would have helped if the dish had even traces of garlic.

The steam rice (INR50 per small bowl) was woefully under-cooked.

The tragedy that followed was the Green Thai curry (INR130). It tasted like paint. The texture of the curry was terrible.
The basil leaves were burnt (literally). The curry was loaded with just small pieces of cauliflower and carrots (aaaaarrghh !!)

However hard we tried, pushing the stuff down the throat was becoming a task that was getting more painful by the minute.

(Packing that and giving it away to the needy on the streets would have brought us their curses; not blessings!)

Couple of tables away, the waiting staff were sitting with legs on the chairs, slurping some drinks and noisily gossiping. Every three minutes a staffer comes to your table to ask whether he could remove the plates, even while you were eating !!!

The hotel management is JUST NOT SERIOUS ABOUT THEIR BUSINESS. It is amply clear.

Considering that we were the ONLY diners in that hall, they took an AWFULLY long time to serve the food !!!

INRs-525 spent on a flop dinner show.

Maybe my review is based on only their Oriental cuisine. Its a case of first impressio is always the best (here - worst) impression !!

As a rule, We are great supporters of pure veg restaurants; but this one was abominable.

Stay CLEAR of GRASS.

Like the great Ivan Lendl once remarked "Grass is for cows"

"DA VINCI"

Summary: Superlative Italian/Continental food
Description:

Wonderful place.

OUTSTANDING FOOD. We are talking veg here.

The mushroom starter was scintillating. Probably one of the best funghi you will get to eat.

These guys know how to make magic with Pasta. The spaghetti was cooked to perfection. The white sauce was magical. I personally summoned the chef to shake hands with him.

Their pizza was incredible. The pizza chef from trattoria should take lessons from these guys.

The waiting staff are pleasant and go about doing their work with a smile.

They have an amazing range of continental desserts. Do try the veg brownie.

Didnt try their drinks. But I am told that their drinks offerings is a formidable list.

Lacking points:

We went on a weekday at 11 pm. There was zero crowd. That does not spell good for a place like this. Hope these guys dont shut down the place.

Do not go to Da Vinci wearing knee-length shorts (like I did) The mosquitoes feast on your calf muscles and ankles.

The Ambience is tooo dimly lit to the point of making you feel insecure.

Ratings:
===============
Food - 10/10
Ambience - 5/10
Service - 8/10
VFM quotient - 7/10.

Will visit this place again and again (provided they dont shut shop soon) and strongly recommend this place for conti veg food.

Out of the blue

| | | | | |
Summary: Out of this world
Description:

These guys take the food business very seriusly and it shows in the final product that lands on the table.

One of the finest pasta I 've ever eaten. Every strand of the spaghetti in white sauce reminds me of heaven. Sheer magic.

Do try their Charcoal grilled stuffed mushrooms.

the honey mint ice tea was a royal way to wash these delicacies down your throat.

Watch out for that waiter 'Devendiran'. He is really good. Knows his stuff and honest.

Planning to go there again to try something new vegetarian.

Pizzeria, Marine Drive

Summary: O Solemio !
Description:

The first pizza i gnawed in Mumbai was here 20 yrs ago.

After trying so many other places over the years, (pls see my prevs post on thin crust pizza-s) I chanced upon the one and only PIZZERIA hoping for a miracle and lo ! the wish was granted.

Memories of that evenings' thin crust pizza melts in my mouth while I write this post.

The waiters - M/s Rajesh and Mihir were sweet and nice. Hats off to you !

My fellow Pizza lovers !! - INVADE the Pizzeria !

Tangy Tamarind

| | | | | |
Summary: Quiet Restaurant with Limited Multi Cuisine Menu
Description:

A quiet place on the 2nd floor with nice round tables that are not occupied most of the evenings. Visited it a couple of times. They have good crisp nachos & garlic bread with cheese. Pasta was decent but can be improved upon. However the one in white sauce was much better. The drinks OK priced but no accompaniments so you have to order.

The mughlai/indian mini meal is sufficient for 1 person since it comes with parathas.

All in all a convenient place to go with a couple of business associates or a loved one, where the idea is to spend time & not gorge.

The service is good & they let you drink in peace if you tell them.

Gallops

| | | |
Summary: elegant dinners
Description:

Gallops is a restaurant inside Mahalaxmi Race Course. It has the feel of a British game and country restaurant. It is spacious, has a tall ceiling, and a well stocked bar. Atleast the menu lists a good selection of scotches and other liquors.

They have a reputation for good continental food. However, i have had mixed results. The canneloni was really good. Chicken shashlik skewers were pretty good. The chicken risotto wasn't great, had too much chicken, too much basil, and too much cheese, and not enough rice. Had a roast lamb in a wine/pepper sauce on a previous visit which was a stringy and not fun.

Their indian food is worth a shot too, the chicken kebabs are pretty good, and am told the biryanis are excellent.

The desserts sound great. Just had the plum pudding, and it was warm, soft, and not too sweet.

The restaurant is always full, even weekdays, so make reservations before going. Good place for a bunch of friends to go for a nice dinner or even for a date.

Essex Farms

| | | |
Summary: For a quiet evening with family
Description:

In all my years in Delhi, I never knew that essex farms had a great restaurant and banquet hall. Built on a nice and airy plot near Mother's international school, this place is an ideal for a nice quiet evening with family.

The prices were quite reasonable and the menu though limited, has a lot of dishes unheard of... Tamatar Musallam and Corn Jalfrezi were things I had NEVER seen in a Mughlai restaurant.

The ambiance was very nice and you could have a private cabin, the usual noisy do or an evening under the stars. That was a choice you had! We picked the private cabin which was quite cozy for 8 people and since it was a round table, it seemed as if we were having a nice family dinner with exotic food... Quite Cool!

The only thing that irked me a bit was that they charged 55 bucks for one bottle of water...

A good experience altogether!

Summary: Hotel in Kolhapur, with multi cuisine restaurants, coffee shop, swimming pool, disc
Description:

One of the better hotels in Kolhapur but now seems to be going down in service levels and mostly living off the name it's created.

It has a couple of restaurants, a Pub/Bar, a Coffee Shop + Swimming Pool area and a discotheque.

Stayed there for 2 days but only had the breakfast buffet at the Coffee Shop which was just ok, decent food to start off your day but nothing to write home about.

Room service was quick and efficient but the air conditioning was poor. Everything else was at acceptable levels.

Well with the room rates around those of a budget hotel in Bombay, it's a pretty decent deal but most people I spoke to suggested Hotel Pearl as the better and cheaper alternative.
