Cafe Excelsior

| | | | |
Summary: Once upon a time food heaven
Description:

It used to be a no fuss eatery , an interesting variety of meat preparations. From the basic kheema cutlets to slightly more exotic Dabba Gosht , all served up in an old world ambience.

My heart breaks to say this, but the food at Cafe Excelsior is horrendous. There used to be a time i would almost lick the plates clean The food this time around was plain ugly. The curry and the meat hadnt met anywhere else before than in the plate. So it was just boiled meat and thick gravy put in a dish and served up.

I would still not complain , if and only if the meat wasnt as stringy. Please dont ever go there again.

Irani Chai of Paradise

| | | |
Summary: If you are in Hyderabad, and haven't tried Paradise tea, you are missing something !
Description:

Paradise restaurant serves the *best* Irani Chai in Hyderabad. Chai lovers' should not miss it for sure - you can miss out on the biryani if the need be. :) Since the Paradise Circle has four Paradise restaurants', it is very important to know which one of them. Here - Stand facing MG road at the Paradise Circle, take the small lane between MG Road and SD Road. This lane has no tar road, and goes to Sindhi Colony. The Paradise Restaurant in this lane is the one we are looking for. Another landmark is, next to the Paradise restaurant takeaway.

Cafe Sunrise

| | | | | | |
Summary: Good Irani in Deccan Gymkhana circle
Description:

Cafe Sunrise was a favourite brekkie destination in the late 90's for Pune's IT workers. Then suddenly after a month's gap there was a Dosa Diner there. We were all horified and sad. However Sunrise is now back - the hardcore people didn't patronize DD I guess. I was there again recently and the old waiters, torn 5 rupee notes (the usual tip trick), omelettes and burjis are all back. I was relieved.

Sunrise attempts to be an arty Irani with paintings from budding artists adorning the wall. Otherwise the wooden furniture is all as expected. The snacks are very good. The chai, pav, omelette/burji routine is well set. The 'Fried eggs with chips' is a different dish w.r.t. other Iranis.

Cafe Good Luck

| | | | | | |
Summary: Famous Irani at Deccan Gymkhana
Description:

Cafe Good Luck is on the corner of Fergusson and Bhandarkar roads in Deccan. The place has been serving great non-veg food and loads of the usual Irani chai-pav for at least 3 generations now.

The front visible part of the Cafe overlooking the crowded traffic junction is ok for chai and samosas. For lunch or dinner, sit outside tucked away in the lane. Order any of the usual non-veg dishes and you will be satiated. However, for charged up stuff, order the bheja dishes, mutton baida roast (very oily), biryanis.

Sassanian Boulangerie

| | | | | | | | |
Summary: Very old Parsi food place with a bakery
Description:

A very old and famous instiution like and Irani joint. Serves good Parsi food. The national influence of Indian-Chinese food has crept in here too. None the less most people consider this to be very good. The attached bakery has yummy treat and Lagaan-nu-custard to take home or eat.

In one exceptional experience (an anomaly I am told), the mutton cutlets were reheated (and left partially cold), and the roast chicken was actually in a standard Chinese manchurian sauce.

Koolar and Company

| | | | |
Summary: Some of the best Irani omelettes
Description:

Koolar is a very good Irani joint in the Matunga college area. Needless to stay, many college kids hang out there during the day.

They have very good omelettes and grilled sandwiches. All in all, an excellent snack place. The motto on their menu reads - "One who cares for his money, shops and eats at Koolar and Company". A cool Irani joint complete with wooden tables, round wooden chairs, glass tops.
