Mahalaxmi

Gallops is a restaurant inside Mahalaxmi Race Course. It has the feel of a British game and country restaurant. It is spacious, has a tall ceiling, and a well stocked bar. Atleast the menu lists a good selection of scotches and other liquors.

They have a reputation for good continental food. However, i have had mixed results. The canneloni was really good. Chicken shashlik skewers were pretty good. The chicken risotto wasn't great, had too much chicken, too much basil, and too much cheese, and not enough rice. Had a roast lamb in a wine/pepper sauce on a previous visit which was a stringy and not fun.

Their indian food is worth a shot too, the chicken kebabs are pretty good, and am told the biryanis are excellent.

The desserts sound great. Just had the plum pudding, and it was warm, soft, and not too sweet.

The restaurant is always full, even weekdays, so make reservations before going. Good place for a bunch of friends to go for a nice dinner or even for a date.

The continuing search for Bombay's best rock pub throws up the Ghetto as another serious contender. The Ghetto well known to the college crowd has the ambience exactly of a Ghetto. There is a pool table, dim neon lights, thankfully no flashing lights like a disc, great music, and drinks are affordable (230 for a pitcher of beer). The walls are filled with graffiti giving the place a nice feel.

The Ghetto has a really decent DJ playing the usual classic rock, hard rock numbers upto 1:30am. He played Jethrotull followed by Supertramp which impressed me. On weekdays and Sundays there is ample space to stretch out and party away with friends. It is quite packed on weekends though.

There is no cover charge at least on Sundays. Someone please fill in other day details.

Good fruit juices. Great fruit cream till at least 2 am. The fruit cream price has gone up while the fruit in it has gone down.

Cafe Noorani is a good place for mutton, biryanis, and kababs. Bang in Haji Ali circle, it is very famous. They have interesting fried ice-cream.
