Vile Parle

On Toes

| | | |
Summary: Good Location - never visited
Description:

Had been hearing about this place quite a lot. Finally visited it. A typical restaurant. Close Tables that you can overhear conversation on the next. The service at 7.30 to 9 was pathetic with the waiter training the trainee who could not understand smirnoff. Stingy with the freebies. Looked like a typical place where only the regulars may end up getting service. Food nothing to write about; the same red & brown gravy. Their new one in Malad seems to be better? Would visit & compare.

Summary: Great Food & Great Ambience! Definitely a Must Visit!
Description:

Another restaurant from the BJN Group..Lives up to the mark. Setting, interior decor is awesome, on the lines of Aromas of China and service pretty attentive.
Situated at Vile Parle west right above McDonands on the 1st and 2nd floor.
Have been there around thrice between the last couple of months and am glad to say that 3 out of 4 times the experience was great..
Only the afternoon buffet was not impressive on a saturday - the starters were cold and the food average & quite greasy...Also, I had taken some business associates for the lunch buffet - but the restaurant was filled with the kitty party crowd in the afternoon - too noisy and crowded...
Othewise the a-la-carte menu is awesome - not too many varieties in starters for non-veg. but great food..
One of the mutton items Lawrence road ke tikke or something like that awesome! So was the the chilly roti - (mildly spicy)...
The chicken tikkas & kebabs were good too (a trifle too oily though).
The biryani is great and the desserts quite good too..
Pricing - not too steep - and portions are generous -- They serve alcohol too. A meal for 8 of us with 1 drink each set us back by around Rs. 4500/-
All in all a great experience. Be fore-warned, they do not take reservations and people literally are queueing outside the door for a table..
Strategically, as there are no great restaurants in Vile Parle West and we have a richie -rich Gujrati community there - the most difficult part is getting a table there!
Cheers,
Ajai Bathija

Tosa

| | | | | | |
Summary: Authentic Marwari, Maharashtrian and Gujarati food, creatively presented
Description:

There is a small restaurant called TOSA tucked away next to a big Cafe Coffee Day in VilleParle East, station road. Went there for the second time today (this time for lunch). They happen to serve some very creative authentic marwari / gujarati plus maharashtrian food. I'm told their menu resembles that of Swati Snacks, and the restaurant is run by the famous Trupti Caterers.

We had a kairi na muthia as a starter served with a green chutney and a sweet chutney. Then shared a baked khichdi with raita (mini meal). Yeah the khichdi (very flavourful, no excess masala etc) was actually baked after the thick kadi was poured on the top and the yogurt had browned a bit like cheese.

But the highlight of the lunch was Mango on Mango Kulfi, which was incredible for the creativity involved. It's a slice of mango with peel that had half inch of mango flesh, topped with mango kulfi. They manage to destone the fruit somehow, stuff it with mango kulfi and serve it quartered. I regretted not having carried my camera. Prices are quite reasonable too.

If you are in Vileparle East, you must give this one a try. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Try and avoid the Pastas and other continental varieties, especially when you have lots of options available from the traditional menu. I've heard that you'll forget what Italian food is all about, if you eat it here. So don't tell that you weren't warned

Babu's Vada-pau stall

Summary: Fantastic vada pav stall in Vile-Parle(East)
Description:

A small vada pav joint started by the canteen guy of Parle Tilak Vidyalaya. The menu is very basic (batata vada and samosa, with and without pav..) The food is very cheap and served hot with spicy chutney.

I personally like samosa-pav..

Gajalee

Summary: The place where SigFood started in 1999
Description:

Gajalee (the Andheri branch) was where SigFood started out in 1999. There are two branches - one near the MIDC police station in Andheri (E), and the other near Shaan theatre and Hanuman Road in Vile Parle (E).

It is an old Malvani seafood place with good fresh seafood including crabs, kapri(pomfret), squid. Affordable and good thalis. Fried/grilled pomfret is a standard favourite. The Solkadhi here is a personal favourite and I have called it soul-curry at times.

There is supposedly a newer branch in Pheonix Mills, Lower Parel. This information is confirmation-pending.
