Cafe

Mumbai Times Cafe'

| | |
Summary: Outrageous
Description:

Horrible is one of the adjectives you can think of.

They let you in against a cover charge of Rs300 which is adjusted against F&B.

The waiters don't know anything about the menu. The pizza served is a 6"X 4" (Have you heard of a shape like that for a pizza?)

The fried rice was the worst I have ever eaten.. made with God knows shat oil / lard..

The adjoining discotheque does not have sound-proof walls. So the jarring and pounding does bother you immensely.

Just avoid their loos if you are not the kind who can handle throwing-ups.

They have a pint sized menu and half of the items in it are "Not available" !!!

It is just a seedy joint where you see lots of young boys and girls boozing/puffing away to glory.

F&B : 1/10
Ambience : 5/10
Service: 3/10
Facilities : 2/10

Overall rating : 2.5/10

NEVER EVER GO TO THIS ONE. WASTE of TIME & MONEY.

The All American Diner

| | | | | | |
Summary: Pancakes , toasts , shakes , cocktails ... the diners style
Description:

Promising to keep up with the popular diners brand, this place serves some nice pancakes, toasts , burgers and all that makes up for an american breakfast along with some seldom found main course items.

I found the potato/veg pancakes rare and quite satisfactory to my taste buds. The food is fresh, less spicy(even the spiciest might not be spicy for indian taste) and looks exotic in presentation as well.
The drinks cover almost all cocktails, mocktails and general hard drinks but also include some innovative alcohol-coffee combinations which look very tempting to be tried.

The decor is made up to suit the 50-60's retro look, what with some red-ed setup and everything matching up to it and while you dine, rock'n'roll with Elvis :)

Indigo Deli

| | | | | | |
Summary: Excellent choices from breakfast to Lunch
Description:

Indigo Deli is an off shoot of the famous Indigo which is a short walk away. This is a bit more toned down less experimentive but still excellent restaurant.

Its created to be like a New York Deli and it works quite well. Equal parts casual, comfortable yet stylish.

The menu is extensive and you can choose from breakfast items Eggs,Waffles, Pancakes (150-250)Soup (200) Salads (200-250) to Pasta to Pizza.

I would highly reommend just about everything on the menu, the pasta is spectacular especially the spagetti as are the pancakes. The salads come with a balsamic vinegariette dressing which really magnifies the taste. The pizza is highly likeable but i personally dont like it very much, its almost papad like.

Drinks are just general, nothing too dramatic or new though i think 100bucks for fresh orange juice is criminal.

The desserts are varied, tiramisu, cheesecake, mousse, all excellent.

Overall, i have been here multiple times and i think the food is excellent, the menu is extensive and eclectic enough to have something for everone.

The service can be quite wanting sometimes as they can be painfully slow sometimes. Seating can also be difficult even at 4pm on a weekday. However the waitstaff is courteous and accomodating if you are nice as well.

Pricing is on the high side (not 5 star coffee shop high) i would reckon a meal for 2 without alcohol to be between 600-800.

Describe the place. As long as you want. Include some food/drink tips, what not to miss, what to avoid, etc.

A rating based on one visit might be misleading - try and keep things fact-based. Remember, we are a hitchhiker's guide to eating and drinking.

Samovar

Summary: Samovar - Relaxed dining in Arty Ambiance
Description:

Samovar – The ideal place for a Relaxed Lunch in Arty Ambiance
By
Vikram Karve

When I was a small boy I traveled all over the country by train, and I remember many trains like The Calcutta Mail via Nagpur, The Frontier Mail, The Grand Trunk Express, and even the Deccan Queen, had Restaurant or Dining Cars where one could sit comfortably and enjoy leisurely meals comprising the choicest “railway cuisine” whilst viewing the scenery passing by through the large open windows. Each train had its own special a la carte dishes apart from the thalis. One can’t enjoy this luxury anymore as the railways have replaced Dining Cars with Pantry Cars and they serve lackluster standard meals packed in foil, paper and plastic containers.

On a warm Mumbai afternoon I feel nostalgic and remember the good old railway dining car lunches, and I am in a mood for a relaxed lunch in arty ambiance, so I convince my friend and we head for Samovar at the Jehangir Art Gallery at Kala Ghoda near the Museum. Samovar restaurant is situated next to the art gallery in a long rectangular veranda and resembles a Railway Restaurant Car of yesteryear. We relax on the cane chairs and enjoy the view of the adjoining Museum lawns.

There is a menu card, but the specialties of the day are scribbled on blackboards on both ends of the no-frills eatery. We order the specialties of the day – a Mutton Chilly Fry Lunch and Hyderabadi Kheema with Lachi Paratha. The tender boneless Mutton Chilly Fry well cooked in a thick dark brown sauce has a nice spicy peppery taste and blends well with the garlic bread and fresh salad. The fiery orange-red chilli-sour Hyderabadi Kheema is lip-smackingly zesty, the paratha super-soft and fluffy, and the combination is delicious.

Next we have the wholesome stuffed parathas [Gobi (Cauliflower) and Kheema] accompanied by their appetizing chutneys followed by Kheema and Kabab Rolls. To cool off, we end with the huge soothing Dahi Wadas. I’m tempted to order a biryani or a prawn pulao, but we’re nicely satiated and overeating will spoil everything – maybe we’ll try the rice dishes next time.

Samovar has a unique charm and friendly ambience you won’t find anywhere else. It serves excellent value-for-money food and is an ideal place for a cosy tete-a-tete with a friend over a leisurely lunch on a lazy afternoon.

Cafe Maaz

| | | | | | | | | | |
Summary: Wonderful hardcore Muslim style food; rare in the central suburbs
Description:

A wonderful little joint discovered on a bus journey on LBS Road in Bhandup. Cafe Maaz is a hardcore Muslim style eatery serving the usual Indian, Mughlai food with a large variety in Mutton which is rare in the central suburbs. There are very few places of this kind north of Kurla on the Central line. Cafe Maaz is at Sonapur bus stop, a 5 minute walk south from Nirmal lifestyles.

Three of us started with Mutton simple fry - excellent chomping in store. We had Bheja fry in egg - which was very good too. We had Mutton Kabuli (Mutton in a Kabuli chana gravy) and the usual Butter chicken. Chapatis and Rotis were excellent. Looking around we saw good Tandoori chicken, and other chicken/mutton gravies being enjoyed at the other tables. Our order turned out to be in red gravy and I saw the green and white ones floating around.

There was a stall right next to the entrance who was frying eggs, chicken, fish to make a great stret-food stall - he is not a part of the cafe but looked worth a try definitely. As in other cafes of this kind, no smoking, no drinking, no beef, no pork. All in all, good food, honest prices.

Eat Street

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
Summary: A multi-cuisine food court on the banks of the hussain sagar lake
Description: Eat Street is a food court sitting on one of the banks of the hussain sagar lake, Hyderabad. The other side being Tank Bund. It's a spacious place with room for people along the banks of the hussain sagar as well as on the roof. Even with the large seating capactiy, it's very hard to find seats here on a weekend. Such is it's popularity. Even so it's very clean and well maintained. This is how the entrance looks. These pictures were taken by Sumeet. The jobless pics are mine. click image for better color Click here for another view, of the inside, under the roof. Eat Street has the following food counters: A Minverva Coffee Shoppe: Serves south indian tiffins like dosa's, idli's etc. They also serve some hot(and fresh) jalebi's. No maincourse items though. Nothing like andhra meals or anything. Chaat Corner: I love the Dahi poori here. The other chaat's are good too, I hear. I've tried the Samosa Ragada and Dahi Poori on many occasions. I have here a picture of Jalebi's and Dahi Papdi(or something). In the bottom left, you see Chicken Manchurian style. Not very pricey at 65 rupees. The one time I tried it, it had a peppery taste to it. Notice the wooden plate on which the dahi-chaat is served on? Don't forget the pomegranate seeds. This is half the spread at the chaat counter. Click for a bigger view. Chinese: This counter serves up around 8 different starts in non-vegetarian and 6 in vegetarian. It has set chinese meal package's in both veg and non-veg and offers a choice of veg fried rice/veg noodles with a curry, dry item/salad. Softdrinks are avaliable at all the counters btw. Here's an example. That's veg fried rice, a chicken curry and a salad. The other plate is a chicken dry item. Wah! Hyderabad: This is the biryani/mughlai counter. My friends vouch for me when I say that the veggie biryani is good here. The chicken biryani is ok-okish but the mutton biryani rocks! One can also get combo's meals with dishes like afghani chicken and naan/roti. Set meals are avaliable in a decent variety. Separate starters/dry items are also avaliable. Good stuff, trustable. Here's a pic of the biryani: I'm sorry for the half eaten cheese garlic bread piece in the right side. Click to take a look at the menu in the background. Icecream Shack: Softies, cones and cups. Various flavours. I've tried Honey-Raisin, Blackcurrant, Apricot, etc. Not pricey at all. And yet, has quite a variety. Here's a pic of pistachio and vanilla-raspberry. Cafe Coffee Day: Like any other Coffee Day. Just Fries: Serves different kinds of french fries. They also serve Moutain dew. Corn Club: All veggie joint. Serves excellent baked corn with cheese and babycorn french fries. Pizza Hut: Although this joint doesn't have ALL the items shown on a regular Pizza Hut menu, it is decent. They serve only small pizza's and have very little variety i.e. 2-3 in each variety with Cheese Garlic Bread. Extra's: Shwarma Rolls: Didn't taste very good the last time I tried it. But it looked rather nice. Here's a pic. Cup corn: Three kinds; Butter, Pepper or Masala. 25 rs a cup. Steamed corn in a cup. I love it. Chocolate Hut: Has a vareity of chocolates to try out. Tibb's FrankieTM Stand: The original Bombay FrankieTM in Hyderabad. Has Chicken Tikka, Tawa Chicken, Mutton and Chicken Chettinad frankies in the non-veg and Paneer, Veggie etc frankies too. Also offers grilled sandwiches. Max price of 30 rs. Not particularly filling, but very nice. The good part about this place is that it's always expanding. They're planning to add more stalls to it. FYI, There is a loo present after the kid's playground. Also, one can take the barge or the speedboat and take a tour of the lake. The landing is right off the main eating place. All in all, I'd brand this as a family place. It's timings are: 11:30 am to 10:30 pm.

Eatopia

| | | | | | | | | | |
Summary: A food court with a difference.Located at India Habitat Centre, claimed to be one of the architectural masterpieces !
Description:

With the name an instant eye raiser..the place is where every second person frequenting south delhi would love to dine once. Once is what you have to be there, the successive visits might be uncountable!

Chaats , Gol Gappas for those who would like to take a break from the seemingly unhealthy roadside evening treats...Mouth watering undoubtedly.. a part of Golooji's chaats!

The cakes , pastries and desserts though highly priced leave you digging your pockets for more money to pamper yourself more...That's Grandma's homemade!

my personal favourite being Aaloo chaat and penalty....Delhites thrive on Eatopia's Penalty!

To add to the attraction, there are number of continental delicacies and food festivals which form a part of the dynamic cuisine!
